On Saturday, June 24th, 2017, Mission San Jose High School students and alumni hosted the 3rd annual Fremont Splash at Hopkins Junior High School. Over 120 students from 5th to 9th grade participated, representing over 25 elementary, middle, and high schools across the Fremont Unified School District. The goal of any Splash has always been to expose students to unique science topics outside of the classroom. This year’s did just that, and a bit more, with a themed event focused on technology and its impact on the modern world.
Students had the opportunity to rotate through 3 unique modules, in which instructors hoped to inspire students and imbue foundational knowledge. The computer science course provided an introduction to programming with Java and case studies of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and the internet of things. The 3D printing course provided a window into the world of mechanical design. Students had the opportunity to watch a 3D printer in action, as well as experiment with their own favorite designs on tinkerCAD, a rapid prototyping software. Lastly, the technology entrepreneurship class put the students’ knowledge to action. After students were exposed to the fundamentals of marketing and finance, they formed teams to brainstorm new applications of technology, developed a short business plan, and pitched it to their fellow classmates in a “Shark Tank” styled activity.
Overall, students described coming away with a better understanding of technology and its role, as well as motivation to continue their own learning in the field. They enjoyed the hands-on, interactive learning throughout the day, whether programming and designing on their laptop, or collaborating with a team of like-minded peers. Likewise, instructors and program staff were glad to share their passion with younger students, inspiring them to use technology to achieve new heights.
Special thanks to FUSD Board of Education members Yang Shao and Desrie Campbell; Superintendent Jim Morris and Mrs. Morris; MSJ Assistant Principal Jeana Nightengale; MSJ Teachers Matt Lazar and Lisa Ishimine; FUSS sponsors Ivy Wu, Letha Saldanha, and Robert Hou; Event Organizer Kevin Wu; and of course, all our student and alumni instructors from Mission San Jose High School.
All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Fremont Unified School District to support quality instruction for over 30,000 students.
